21 Days Mera Peak Climbing & Amphu Labcha Pass Overview

Embark on a breathtaking 21-day Mera Peak Climbing and Amphu Labcha Pass expedition, one of the most fascinating and challenging high-altitude adventures in Nepal. This journey takes you deep into the remote Himalayan wilderness, offering an unparalleled experience for intrepid explorers.

Mera Peak (6,461m / 21,190 ft): The Gateway to Panoramic Views

Conquer Mera Peak, known as Nepal’s highest trekking peak. While physically demanding, its non-technical nature makes it an excellent introductory mountaineering experience. From its summit, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful and expansive views of the Himalayas, including five of the world’s highest mountains: Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, along with numerous other majestic Himalayan peaks. Mera Peak offers a truly exciting ascent, without the extreme steepness often associated with more technical climbs, making it accessible for fit individuals with a strong sense of adventure.

Amphu Labcha Pass (5,845m): A Challenging Alpine Crossing

The expedition’s true highlight and most demanding section is the traverse of the Amphu Labcha Pass. This high-altitude pass, reaching approximately 5,845 meters (some sources state 5,700m or 5,780m), requires technical climbing skills and is considered one of the most challenging passes in the Himalayas. It involves rope work, glacier travel, and a degree of exposure. However, our experienced rock climbing guides and support teams are adept at fixing ropes to ensure a safe descent from the top of the rock face. Our support team will also establish fixed ropes from the top of Amphu Labcha Pass down to the compact blue glaciers of the Base Camp, ensuring the safety of all expedition members.

The Ultimate Peak Combination: Mera Peak & Island Peak

This expedition offers the rare and exhilarating opportunity to combine the ascent of Mera Peak with a traverse over the spectacular and challenging Amphu Labcha Pass, leading directly into the Everest region for a potential Island Peak (6,189m) climb. This makes it one of the most demanding and rewarding trekking and climbing experiences in Nepal. Himalayan Adventure Nepal specializes in this unique dual-peak expedition, allowing each participant to properly acclimatize to two peaks over 6,000 meters and navigate the challenging Amphu Labcha Pass, while exploring the remote Hinku Valley and Imja Tse region.

While Mera Peak is considered an excellent introduction to high-altitude climbing, Island Peak, though slightly lower at 6,189 meters, presents a slightly higher technical requirement and degree of exposure. If you possess climbing skills or are prepared to learn, this combination is an unmissable opportunity. We organize dedicated climbing courses at Base Camp to ensure you acquire all necessary climbing techniques for a safe and successful ascent of both Himalayan peaks.

Itinerary Overview:

Your adventure begins with two nights in Kathmandu, allowing time for expedition briefings, gear checks, and an opportunity to explore the city’s vibrant cultural attractions. The journey kicks off with an exciting scenic mountain flight to Lukla.

  • Mera Peak Ascent: We follow the conventional Mera Peak climbing route, traversing through stunning rhododendron forests and fragrant pine groves. The trail leads us through the Tangnang range to Mera Base Camp, then into the upper, uninhabited mountainous areas of the Hinku Valley. After a successful summit of Mera Peak, we explore a less-used route towards Makalu Base Camp and the wilderness of the Hinku Valley.
  • Seto Pokhari & Amphu Labcha Pass: We camp at Seto Pokhari, a sacred lake above 5,000 meters, nestled beneath the magnificent walls of Chamlang. Here, the awe-inspiring peaks of Lhotse and Mount Everest dominate the horizon. Our next significant challenge is crossing the formidable Amphu Labcha Pass, followed by a technically demanding descent to Island Peak Base Camp. The panoramic summit views are truly unforgettable and will be etched in your memory forever.
  • Descent & Departure: Finally, we trek to Lukla via the charming Thyangboche Monastery. During the trek from Island Peak to Lukla, we utilize local teahouse accommodations, allowing you to enjoy cozy restaurants and comfortable beds after several nights of tent camping.

Participant Requirements:

This expedition demands a good level of outdoor adventure skills, excellent physical fitness, and prior hiking and trekking experience. While previous rock climbing experience is recommended for Amphu Labcha and Island Peak, it is not mandatory as we provide comprehensive training in all necessary climbing techniques at Base Camp.

We go up around 2 in the morning for breakfast. It will be cold at first, but as we continue along the glacier on a special ridge, we will become warmer. The first rays of the sun strike the great peak with an incredible red light. This route is not yet technical because we are slowly climbing the thinnest and thinnest air. The slope behind the slope became steep and the top of the mountain returned to the field of vision. At the bottom of the last steep mountain cone, we can fix it on a fixed rope according to the conditions. The top of the hill is only a few meters from the hotel. From the top of the mountain, we appreciate the magnificent views of the mighty Himalayas, including the mountains. Everest (8,848 meters), Cho-Oyu (8,210 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Makalu (8,463 meters), Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters), Nuptse (7,855 meters), Chamlang (7,319 meters), Baruntse (7,129 meters) ) and something else. We cannot guarantee sufficient climate during our planned summit days. Therefore, if we cannot reach Mera on the 12th due to bad weather conditions or any other accident, this day is reserved for emergencies. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

We head to the yak pastures in this incredibly remote valley. Throughout the morning, the huge flank of Chamlang occupies our left side, and Baruntse’s needle enters the distance. The terrain is very temperate, especially considering that we are actually going directly to the epicenter of the highest mountain in the world. The bottom of the valley is still wide and straight, just in front of the mountain. Almost surprisingly, we headed towards the majestic mountains of Mount Everest and the Lhotse. We will spend the night in the camp at Seto Pokhari. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

This is one of the most remote areas of the Himalayas, so we rarely see hikers on the road unless it is a very high tourist season. Starting with Seto Bockarie, we march through several lakes that occupy the upper reaches of the Hanku basin. After Hunku Pokhari, our trail is next to the magnificent Hunku glacier. We continue moving along another lake. We will spend the night at Amphu Labcha base camp. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

We cross the Amphu Labcha La pass (5,845 m) and then pass through the Amphu Labcha glacier. The Lhotse Shar glacier and the Imja glacier are nearby. Our trail is also surrounded by the middle of Lake Imja Tsho and then walks along the main route of the island. Going further, we also arrive near the Ama Dablam Glacier and then we arrive at Chhukung. We will spend the night in Chhukung. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

We start to go to Namche Bazaar after breakfast. We arrive at a scattered settlement of Bibre and crossed a bridge in Imja Khola. Our trails pass through beautiful villages, pastures, through several bridges, and then to Namche Bazaar. The Dingboche trail has an incredible view. We will spend the night in Namche Bazaar. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

Today we start walking on the rocky terrain towards Namche Bazaar. Most of the trails along the Dudh Koshi River are downhill trails. We went through several suspension bridges, passed through several monasteries and villages, and then we arrived at Lukla. After arriving in Lukla, we will rest for the rest of the day, because today will be our last day on the mountain. We will spend the night in Lukla. Meals included: breakfast lunch dinner.

For safety reasons, flights to Kathmandu are usually scheduled in the morning. After arriving in the capital, we take a day off and eventually.
