19 Days Mera Peak Climbing Overview

Embark on a meticulously designed Mera Peak climbing expedition, offering a deeply satisfying ascent to the top of Nepal’s highest trekking peak, Mera Peak (6,461m / 21,190 ft, with Mera North being 6,476m / 21,247 ft). This adventure is the ultimate choice for those seeking a challenging culminating climb combined with an immersive camping experience amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal’s Everest region.

Prepare to unleash your adventurous spirit as you navigate the seductive charm of the mountains, glaciers, and icefalls of the mighty Himalayas. Under the guidance of an experienced leader, you’ll learn to manage fixed ropes, traverse rocky and glacial terrain, and navigate challenging sections. This journey through picturesque settlements, dramatic mountains, and thrilling glaciers is a profound blessing for those with the endurance required for Mera Peak climbing.

Mera Peak Expedition is classified as a high-altitude trekking and climbing adventure. Participants must be well-acclimatized and proficient in the use of essential mountaineering gear such as ice axes and crampons. Comprehensive training on their proper use will be provided at Base Camp, near Mera La, if necessary, ensuring your safety and confidence for the climb.

This expedition offers an unparalleled experience with breathtaking panoramic views. From the summit of Mera Peak, you will witness a truly unique vista of five of the world’s eight-thousander peaks: Mount Everest (8,848.86m), Kangchenjunga (8,586m), Makalu (8,485m), Lhotse (8,516m), and Cho Oyu (8,201m), alongside numerous other adjacent peaks. This truly remarkable panorama can only be fully experienced from the top of Mera Peak.

Your trek to Mera Peak will take you along diverse landscapes, from lush foothills and terraced farmland to vibrant rhododendron forests and traditional ethnic villages, before ascending into the wilder, mountainous terrains of the Everest region. While Mera Peak climbing can be a significant challenge, our team of highly trained climbing guides and our reliable travel company, Mountain Expedition Nepal, are committed to ensuring your trip is as safe and valuable as possible.

Accommodations:

During your Mera Peak climbing expedition, your accommodation will be arranged as follows:

  • Kathmandu and Pokhara: You will stay in comfortable 3-star hotels. All rooms are on a twin-shared basis. A single supplement can be provided upon request at an additional cost.
  • During the Trek: We utilize local teahouses in the lower trekking regions. In most parts, rooms with attached washrooms may be available where possible. However, as you ascend to higher elevations, particularly at Mera Peak Base Camp and High Camp, accommodation will transition to tented camps. Private washroom facilities are generally not available at higher altitudes. Mountain Expedition Nepal will always do its best to ensure your comfort and happiness throughout the journey.

Meals:

  • During Trekking and Climbing: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) will be served, typically featuring a main course per meal. This includes the tented camp days at Mera Peak Base Camp and High Camp, where nutritious and energy-rich meals will be prepared by our camp cooks.
  • Kathmandu and Pokhara: Only breakfast is included during your stay in these cities.
  • Welcome and Farewell Dinners: The hotel will also host special welcome and farewell dinners for the group, providing an opportunity to celebrate your adventure.
  • Cuisine: The most common dishes available on menus throughout the trek will include Nepalese (such as Dal Bhat), Tibetan, Indian, and popular Continental options, catering to various tastes.

Can I Accomplish This Trek?

Mera Peak climbing is considered a moderately difficult to slightly difficult (Alpine Grade PD) climb, technically. While it is categorized as a “trekking peak” and does not require advanced technical climbing skills, it is demanding due to its high altitude and the need for basic mountaineering techniques.

  • Stamina is Crucial: You will need significant physical stamina for this expedition.
  • Climbing Knowledge: Having some prior knowledge of using climbing equipment is a valuable asset.
  • Pre-Climbing Training: Himalayan Expedition Nepal provides a crucial pre-ice climbing training session for all participants at Mera Peak Base Camp (or a suitable location nearby). This training focuses on the proper use of essential climbing gear such as ropes, ice axes, harnesses, and crampons, ensuring you are confident and competent for the ascent.
  • Daily Walking Hours: Normally, trekking days involve 5-6 hours of walking daily. However, the summit day for Mera Peak is particularly demanding, requiring an effort of 10-12 hours or potentially more.
  • Physical Preparation: Mountain Expedition Nepal strongly advises you to prepare your body by jogging approximately 12 km every day for at least 3 months prior to your trip departure. This consistent cardio and endurance training will be vital for your success.
  • Medical Consultation: It is critically important to consult your doctor regarding any pre-existing medical conditions, especially those related to the heart, lungs, or blood, before undertaking this high-altitude expedition. Please inform us of any such conditions prior to booking to ensure your safety and well-being.

Best Time to Travel:

The optimal seasons for undertaking the Mera Peak Climbing expedition are:

  • Autumn (September to November): This is considered one of the best seasons, offering stable weather conditions, clear skies, and excellent visibility for stunning mountain views. Temperatures at higher altitudes can range from -15°C to -5°C.
  • Spring (March to May): Another highly recommended season, characterized by stable and dry weather, moderate temperatures (ranging from -10°C to -5°C at higher altitudes), and the added beauty of blooming rhododendrons at lower elevations.

If your preferred travel dates fall outside these peak seasons, please contact us. We are dedicated to customizing and making your trip viable, contingent on prevailing weather and safety conditions.
