Gosaikunda Janai Festival Trek – Full Moon Festival

Lake Gosainkunda is one of the most famous and sacred lakes in Nepal. It is located in Buddhist and Hindu lakes, about 4381 meters above sea level in the north-east of Kathmandu. It is surrounded by the Himalayas and other Kunds such as the Kunda Saraswati, Ganesh Kunda. Surya kunda, Bhairav kunda. Lord Shiva used this sacred lake to pierce the glacier with his trident to obtain water and quench his thirst because he swallowed a poison that threatened to destroy the world. There is a cave on the lake and Amarsing Thapa (a great warrior) spent the last moments of his life. Inside the cave there is a bust of Amarsing Thapa. On the full moon of August every year, thousands of Buddhists and Hindu pilgrims come here to worship Shiva in the sacred lake – Gosaikunda. The shaman “Dhami-Jhankris” performs his religious dances and recites his mantra (holy prayer). According to religious beliefs, there is a passage in the lake, which is transported directly from the lake to the Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley (60 km to the southwest). The Indians sang Gayatri Mantra and changed their sacred thread (Janai) to protect and Rakshya Bandhan, a sacred red and yellow line tied to the priest on the wrist. We can see that the image of Shiva in its center is full of water.
